Hi Jill

Sorry for the late reply.

It does seem quite expensive (although when one compares this with other forms of CPD it compares very favourably) although I think the teachers most likely to benefit from the ATP conference are new, newish or those working in single person departments.

Most of the discussions at the conference will be about the new specs and the conference should be a great way of gaining both information about the new specs and making contacts that will help with the planning of teaching for the next academic year. There will be some very experienced teachers, examiners, senior examiners and so on that will be willing to share their advice and opinions.

I believe that there might be many newish teachers who feel over-whelmed by the conference, and therefore unfortunately do not attend. I have just checked and there are still some places left. Again for new or newish teachers I think that this is one heck of an opportunity to make some great contacts that will help your teaching over the coming months.

Have fun
As a trainee teacher, I can see lots of useful stuff that I could use to develop my teaching practice, but how relevant is it to the new A Level spec, and what will I gain that I can't get from the resources and notes on the OCR website? Just need convincing really, because it's quite a lot of money to spend if it's not going to be directly useful.

Levels of processing = Chi squared is nominal in nature, so this is not the right one. 2 conditions, so it has to be either Wilcoxon or Mann-Whitney. If two separate groups do each condition separately (which they should be doing or you will get either learning effects or fatigue effects) then Mann-Whitney is your baby.

Rob Vokes
robvokes@hotmail.co.uk

Sydenham school
Lewisham
London

The next one can be tricky. It depends on your pupils' specific hypothesis. They may have a subsidury one as two of my students just did. If the're interested in gender differences, as well as bog-standard majority influence, you will have to check that the male/female estimates are not significantly different from each other from a pilot non-influenced experiment. Because if they are then it suggests that they do not come from the same population. If this is the case then your sampling method - presumably opportunity sampling - will be invalidated, such that the main experimental results on what will be a gender balanced cohort of participnants Will be completly invalidated. This is because they may have different baseline from which they were influenced. If this is so You may end up commiting Beta Bias. See "issues" in Eysenk

If its just bog standats maj influence, then a Mann-whitney will do the trick

Lastly the foreign words. repearted measures so Wilcoxen. You can't do a Wilcoxen on an average score from two list. i.e. you can't do a Wilcoxon on one pair of numbers. Do it on the 1 to 5 scores on the two separated sets of words Con1= already seen words: Con2= novel words

I take it that the hyp is H1 = re-seen words are significantly liked more.

But your parts are going to figure this out in a jiffy. Therfore hard to avoid demand characteristics.

Good luck.
I hope i was of some help.

[OCR Psychology] More Stats

Hi guys,

I'm currently carrying out task C with my yr12 students but having not done any statistics for several years (I'm an NQT) I am at a bit of a loss as to what to do. Most of the students in my group have done one of the suggested investigations in the Nelson Thornes Research Methods in Psychology book.

For example, Levels of processing:
Two conditions, semantic and non-semantic questions relating to 20 words. Recall of words in each condition recorded and score given out of 20. Would this be a chi-sq test and if so how should the table be arranged?

Conformity:

Jar filled with smarties, two groups of people asked to provide estimates. One condition exposed to high previous estimates and other condition exposed to low. Participants' estimates recorded - I'm pretty sure this is a Mann-Whitney U?

Mere exposure effect:

Participants given a list of novel words supposed to be from a 'foreign language'. Participants read through list aloud and then given a second list containing some of the words shown previously. Participants rate how 'nice' the words are on a scale of 1-5, favourability rating of words shown previously and not shown previously are then compared. Not really sure what to do with this one: take an average favourability from each condition for each participant and then do a Wilcoxon?

Am pretty rusty so any help or guidance would be hugely appreciated!

Thanks

Is it a Mann-Whitney U? If so how does this relate to the small, medium and large info. Also, in superstat how do you carry out this test adding the correct column data? The student needs to know if there is a sig. difference in male and female body preference. On paper it's clear there is no diff - all chose the medium but the stat test the student did (Mann-Whiteny U) says there's a sig difference. I hate stats so any advice will be useful - feeding this into superstat guide?.

This is my second year of teaching WJEC and I find the main difference between OCR (which I taught before) and WJEC is the amount of time you have at AS to teach it. I really enjoy teaching the AS whereas I found OCR so time pressured that there was little time to really get into things in depth. There were aspects of OCR I enjoyed, such as the praticals at AS, but I prefer the format for the AS: 4 approaches, looking at the main assumptions, strenghts and weaknesses and applications, followed by 10 core studies and research methods.

At A2 I found I would get bored of teaching one applied unit for a whole term. I like the fact that now I do two topics per term, there is still time to teach it at depth, and develop exam skills. My main reason for changing at A2 was the dreaded assignment and coursework. The coursework for WJEC is so much better. It's a pity that it is going.

So, you will either change or not change, but I know there were enough aspects of OCR that I was not happy with that the change was a positive step for me.

Thanks again Mark. The York speaker was a retired teacher called Malcolm Ross, also one of the AS examiners. My next meeting is at Newcastle on Feb 5th when I'll pursue my concerns about the unit 3 assessment and let you know what they say.
Very interested to hear your concerens about inconsistent marking as we had a dreadful experience of it this summer. Our coursework marks were way below previous years, despite doing exactly the same as before, so we complained and after the 10% sample returned with astonishing improvements (one student even went up from D to A!!), OCR agreed to re-mark all 135 scripts again and we saw a dramatic overall improvement, exactly where we should have been in the summer! In fairness to OCR though, this is the only time in 4 years that we have had a problem, although I'm well aware of colleagues like yourself expressing concerns.
Thanks for keeping in touch,

Hi Chris

Thanks for sharing your experience of the meetings. Hopefully, I will be at the spring OCR meeting in Manchester – I think. Do you know who the speaker was for OCR was? Strange that they didn’t have one of the principal examiners for Unit 3

The more thought I have put into the timing etc for the unit 3 the more I am starting to agree with you. If I do find out any more information during examination/moderation meetings this January I will let you know. I really don’t want to have to change awarding bodies but am still considering it – especially considering some of the erratic marking for OCR.

Thanks Mark. The York meeting was a bit disappointing as the speaker was unable to answer a number of concerns and promised to take our questions back to OCR. I have received a reply from Diane Cole who advised me to go to another meeting in spring where the Principal Examiner for Unit 3 is speaking!

I've also attended the AQA presentations but feel the OCR course overall is best for my students. The AS course has a good range of studies to introduce psychology and the A2 offers crime and health which are very popular choices. The Unit 3 assessment remains my main concern. I take your point about the current Section A comparability but with 8-10 mins less time to answer each essay, and an extra 9 marks to find, surely OCR have got this one badly wrong?

I wasn't at the meeting in York - but agree that the ask is a big one in the time allocated.

It can be argued that the new questions for unit 3 are similar to the part a questions on the current specialist choice papers. (Most examiners of these papers will agree that these part a questions questions are the best discriminators on the papers as they require less formulaic answers and do stretch the students). Describe a sub topic and evaluate it.

However, currently a student has 30 mins to complete a part A question. 1 hour 30 mins to complete 4 does seem a bit tight though.

Was the meeting any good?

Having been to the "Get Ready" presentation at York a few weeks ago, I have mixed feelings about the new spec. The content for both courses seems fine and not bogged down with volume but I am bitterly disappointed witht the proposed Unit 3 assessment. 4 essays in 1.5 hrs is outrageous (22 mins per 25 mark essay, including reading/planning time. Each essay is organised around "Describe ...." (10 marks) and "Evaluate ....." (15 marks), including synoptic evidence and "Stretch and Challenge" initiative.

Does anyone else agree this is absurd?
