Karoline Wellborne's Idea

Idea Details

This idea is from Karoline Wellborne's (follow me) mind and was lovingly penned on 1 June 2009.

My idea is ...

My idea is to give out a series of instructions e.g. fold a piece of paper three times, tear it into strips, etc and make each step more outlandish. By the end they are standing on their desks, scattering the paper as they count backwards from 100. The point is to get them to think about why they obeyed ( also if I had to use any prompts) A great way to introduce Milgram.

I have done this 4 times this year, with 3 AS groups and a GCSE group. It worked really well and a great starter activity. Apart from the GCSE group thought it was going to be a magic trick! Some of the students who know what the next topic is do guess, but they all kept it to themselves and obeyed anyways. I got them to do the following: Put your name in the upper left-hand corner of the paper Draw five small squares in the upper right-hand corner of the paper Put an X in each square Sign your name in the middle of the page After your name write “Yes, yes, yes” Put a circle in the bottom left hand corner Draw a triangle around the circle Punch three small holes in the top right corner of the page Fold your page in half three times Stand up Swap your paper with the person next to you Wave at them whilst saying “Thank you for swapping your piece of paper” Sit back down Open up their piece of paper in front of you Put one hand on your head and sit on the other Stay like this until I say so...
